Opportunities rarely arrive with perfect timing.
They show up sideways. A recruiter message. A role opening. An unexpected conversation. And sometimes they show up as disruption.
If that’s happened to you, you know the feeling. You want to respond with confidence, but you’re scrambling.
These two exercises will put you in a different position next time.
Exercise 1: Create a “Save That” Folder
Build one place where you collect proof of your impact.
Save things like:
- Positive Feedback
- Metrics and Results
- Wins (Big and Small)
- Leadership Moments
- Projects and Outcomes
Save it now. Evaluate it later. You will never regret having too much to work with.
Exercise 2: Find a Target Role

Find a job posting that reflects where you want to go. You’re not applying. You’re using it as a map.
Ask:
- What skills are required?
- What gaps exist?
- What can I start building now?
The goal is not to feel behind. It is to get intentional.
The Bottom Line
Staying ready does not mean staying restless. It means taking small, thoughtful steps so you are prepared when the right opportunity shows up.
